Chapter Nine — Cendrillon

We came home late that night. Albert and I spent the early hours of the morning reading in each other’s arms. Being curled up next to him in my giant, purple bed was wonderful. It felt like being wrapped in a blanket of love. His arms around me made me feel safe. They were a haven for my running mind. When I was laying against him, time stopped. I didn’t have to think. All I had to do was feel. Albert cleared my mind like a warm cup of tea. The words he whispered in my ear made me melt. They were so powerful and overwhelming that they made me want to stay tucked in his arms forever.

He’d gotten up to answer a phone call. I decided to make good use of my time and take a shower. While he was downstairs talking about some boring business deal, I watched the soap travel down my arms and legs. The lavender shampoo was strong enough to overpower my senses. Rosemary oil coated my body with drops that made their way down my chest and onto my abdomen. I felt like a flower. The room smelled as if it were a garden. When I closed my eyes, I imagined I was walking through a meadow. Wildflowers sprouted around me as my dress swirled in the wind. But when I opened my eyes, I saw the pretty skylight above me that revealed the grayish-blue London air. Yet it didn’t bother me. I was starting to love this place. The beaches weren’t the same, but England had its own charms.

Albert was happy here. Of course, I hoped his change of mood had something to do with me. Still, I couldn’t help but notice that he seemed more like himself in London. He didn’t seem to feel the need to pretend. He was like a butterfly that had been set loose. When he reached England, he could finally fly. I didn’t want to take him away from here. Besides, we were both happy. We literally had forever to decide where we wanted to live. There wasn’t a reason we couldn’t split our time between two places. But right now, I was happy in this foggy town.

I stepped out of the shower and wrapped my towel around my body. In the mirror, I looked like a creature of snow. My lips were bright red, my eyes sparkling blue, and my raven hair bunched in wet curls. I was Snow White, but not the Disney version. Perhaps a retelling of the classic tale in nightmare form. It wasn’t a story for children.

I put on a purple dress that fell to my knees in a swirl of cotton. My feet were bare, and my toenails dark blue. A warm sweater was wrapped around my shoulders, making me look like a girl prepared for a cozy afternoon at home.

When I left the bathroom, I found a bundle of roses upon my bed. Their scent was intoxicating. I lifted one to my nose and inhaled its sweet aroma.
